Supporting Learning on the Western Slope

A group of business men and women discuss a topic.

Our mission at Dyslexia Foundation of Western Colorado is to bring awareness and provide support, information, and funding to families with learners affected by dyslexia. Nearly one child in five has dyslexia. Through donations and grants, our goal is to provide educational screenings, information, and advocacy for families through services and/or funding for:

1. Identification, screening, and testing for learning disabilities for youth in our community.

2. Interventions and/or tutoring for the child.

3. Assistive technologies for classroom use.

DFWC played a crucial role in advising and collaborating with lawmakers to draft CO HB24-1342, which focuses on testing accommodations for persons with disabilities. Through their expertise and advocacy efforts, DFWC was able to ensure that the bill addressed the needs of those with dyslexia and provide them with the necessary accommodations to succeed in their occupational pursuits. This legislation is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable workplaces for all Coloradans.

At the June 2024 signing of the law, our board members Lisa, Glacia, and representative Makayla pose with Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and Rep. Matt Soper.

Our Services

In November of 2023, we start our tenth year of operation and have provided services to families in Mesa, Montrose, Delta, Moffat, and Garfield counties. In the last two years alone, we have screened over 200 children for dyslexia and provided advocacy support to their families. We focus on educational screening and consultation support, so our waitlist is usually a week at most. We have even been able to offer educational scholarships for those who need them. Each year, the number of families we support grows substantially. Until now, we have operated solely on private donations and a volunteer board. While we are grateful for this, as we begin our next decade of support, we must think of sustainability. To continue to offer the same quality support and remain a resource on the Western Slope, our board has elected to implement a sliding scale to cover some of the costs we incur. We realize that it may be unusual for us to announce a celebration and at the same time announce we are implementing a fee. Our goal is to remain transparent with the funding we receive in best practice with the services we offer.
